FROM EMPATHY TO APATHY AND BACK AGAIN

BRING EMPATHY BACK!

We have to start caring about something again!

We’ve been through so much, and believe me – I am not trying to make light of the pain and suffering of the past few years. So many people have had absolutely horrible life changes and my heart hurts for them.

We all fall on a continuum of not very affected to “give me a break…how have I NOT been affected?” If this horrible time did not touch you terribly, the chances are great that you know of at least one person that it did.

There is a fatigue in the air. People are tired and sometimes it is easier to not care. We have landed in a gross apathetic state – a malaise that borders on giving up!

FROM EMPATHY TO APATHY AND BACK AGAIN

There is a huge difference between looking at this pandemic intellectually, and emotionally feeling the loss, sadness and continuing struggles many people face. Our minds are very powerful machines, and though powerful – they are not infallible. We may “think” that we are okay, but the mind is great at playing tricks on us.

Is it possible that due to the long-standing pain we have decided that it is better to NOT FEEL?

When the pain is so large and affects so many people it can be overwhelming and so the psyche thinks it will help to shut down our caring mechanism – If we don’t care – then it won’t hurt…right? WRONG!! I have experience with this kind of defense mechanism, and I can tell you that THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO COPE! When we stop caring – we stop feeling – EVERYTHING!

FROM EMPATHY TO APATHY AND BACK AGAIN (1)

The trouble with this pandemic is that it was global and affected every person on the planet. Masses of people all went into this self-protection mode at the same time. We tipped the balance of the majority of people in the world from empathy to apathy, and this is a state that can be difficult to shift back!

We can’t continue to go through the motions and pretend that we are alive. We’ve got to bring empathy back. We can’t continue to not care because we are humans and we were built in love – to love! We are part of a whole and it is time for the whole to start healing!

Go ahead – CARE! CARE ALOT! Get involved with people again. Listen to their struggles and if they ask for advice…give it! If they don’t…then just listen and let them know someone cares.

We have to stop protecting ourselves because in the process we are watching a species slowly and silently, yet surely, die! We are watching our own species become severed, each person an island unto itself. We become a willing participant in the separation under the misguided understanding that it will help, and this is the greatest misconception because WE ARE MADE TO BE CONNECTED!

IT IS TIME TO START CARING AGAIN!

Blessitude!

  1. Thank you Lorrie for the beautiful and wise reminders. I totally agree and have fallen into apathy about many things, while knowing I/we need to feel, connect, and care about each other and the planet. Big hugs! 💕

    1. Thanks for adding your take here, Brad 😊 It makes sense for us all to want to stop feeling bad things…but the only way to change it is to change our mind and start feeling good things again! Feeling…no matter what…is so much better than not feeling!
      Sending all good things 😊💜

  2. With all the global changes, people simply have to be better prepared to accept all the bad things which come with such changes. I remember how I warned my students not to go traveling when the pandemic just started. Many people just didn’t believe it and went anyway. Some of them are not among us any longer.
Empathy is a good thing, but what helps somebody literary crawl out of the ditch is willingness to try something different, not what we tried before.
We certainly got separated, however, those, who took 4-5 vaccines also cared for the others. Anybody who didn’t spread the disease, helped recovering.
Nowadays world is so biased and people are confused.
Well, empathy starts with love to oneself. If you care for yourself, you care for people around you.
I don’t like where we are nowadays and it’s easy to become nostalgic. Knowing everything (as in finding anything on search engines) doesn’t make life better. The small world was better. The one of community and close personal relationships. We’ve made everything impersonal and global, so it’s more difficult to relate to something which we do not know as being real or true.
Great post, and I know you always care. I hope you had a good weekend!

    1. Hi Inese😊💜 Wow…you added so much here…all things that I can absolutely relate to! I particularly love…and agree wholeheartedly…that true empathy starts with the love we feel and show to ourselves! If we can’t offer love, and compassion, to the person we spend the most time with -chances aren’t good that we will know how to do it for others.

My journey has been one of first realizing that I didn’t love myself. That was a learned trait. But the beautiful thing is that we can learn…and I have learned to love myself. And with that love it is easy for it to spill over to others 😊

I just had an experience with a lady who clearly does not love herself (or anyone) and she attacked me for something I did not do. My first reaction was that she must have had a bad day and so the next day I went to see her in person and believed it would be different. Well…not so different! She attacked me in person that time. I was proud of myself because the old me would have stood there and defended myself and most probably my anger would have risen. Instead – I walked away and all I said was GOODBYE! And that was a true goodbye – I will take my business elsewhere. I won’t lie and say that it doesn’t bother me a little, but I realize what she did was all about her – nothing to do with me!

Thank you for adding your beautiful energy and thoughts here. I hope that things are well in your world and that you are settled and busy creating your beautiful art! Many blessings…

  3. Yes dear Lorrie, we ARE all connected, wherever we are, whoever we are. Love, caring and compassion is the way forward. I’ve seen lots of division these past three years but it’s made my heart open even more. A beautiful post in which I can feel the empathy, passion and caring in every word you wrote. Sending you much love and big hugs my friend. 💜🙏

    1. Hi Miriam 😊 Thank you so much for your kind words. I am happy that you can “feel” it as I got quite emotional writing it. I hear you about how the division has helped you to open your heart even more. It’s like we are surrounded with energy that is antagonistic to our soul and to be able to survive we have to turn up the level of love! Here’s to more love…more compassion! We have a big job ahead, but I also know that as lightworkers unite, we amplify love and that energy has incredible power!

I hope that the “love” month finds you settled and peaceful. All good things, my friend! 😊💜

  4. As always, you have written another beautiful post, Lorrie. You are right that the pandemic has affected all of us – some in horrible ways that are incomprehensible. I find myself confused, because there was so much fear-based energy expended. For instance, the habit of not hugging is very uncomfortable for me. Thankfully, I’ve broken through some of the hesitation and accept that it will take time to figure this all out. But in the meantime, I am grateful for keeping an open heart and enjoying my creative pursuits!

    1. Ah, Judy! You have hit the nail on the head…we are so blessed that we have our creative pursuits because it is precisely that energy that has helped us get through this incredibly hard time! I hear everything you say and it’s funny you bring up hugging…I was not a hugger…in fact “touching” made me uncomfortable for most of my life. I broke through that and before the pandemic, I had just started to really enjoy hugging…and then BAM! No more hugging…UGH! It seems strange now to want to hug someone so badly, and to have to ask if it is okay.

I hope you are well, and hope I didn’t miss a reminder of your live last night (I just realized it’s Monday…I thought today was Sunday!!!) Sending all good energy and thoughts of love!!

      1. Oh, Lorrie – I forgot to send you a reminder lol! I guess I was rushed when I was sharing my links and went from memory. Yikes! I always like to include you. 🙂
And of course, I’m always touched whenever you pop in there! I do keep a link on my blog every week, so if I ever forget and you remember – it’s there!
Anyway, I know many people could relate to the hug part. I have to keep remembering to ask if it’s okay. I wonder if that will ever change.
Sending you lots of love and light for a great week, Lorrie!

        1. I’m sorry friend…I only realized this morning that yesterday was Sunday…and then I thought I missed you…and then I worried if you were ok! Glad all is well…and never apologize…I certainly can go to your website as you said 💜💜
Yes…the permission for hugging…I wonder just how long we will have to do that!!!
Sending all good energy my friend. I hope you have a beautiful week 😊💜

  5. Hi, Lorrie, Beautiful post. I imagine it will take a good long time for us to come to grips with the epidemic’s impact on all of us. Still, it does feel nice to really breathe out and feel connected. Be well.

    1. Yes, Michael, I agree. I think half the struggle is that the effects are so far reaching and so numerous that it is almost incomprehensible! But we have to start somewhere…and love and compassion – AND connecting, sounds good to me 😉 Hope you are well and handling the weather up there!! Thank you 😊💜

  6. Beautiful post. I imagine it will take a good long time for us to come to grips with the epidemic’s impact on all of us. Still, it does feel nice to really breathe out and feel connected. Be well.

    1. Thanks, Kirt 🙂 It’s so true that we have to acknowledge things before we can change! So much of life is acknowlege…deal with it…let it go! Sure hope that things are well in your world!! Sweet Blessings

  7. Excellent post. The mind-body-spirit impact of the pandemic is monumental. I know many people, including myself, who have not been able to recover our momentum. 🙏

    1. I know!! It feels like the last few years were a dream and that even though I am awake…everything still seems a bit fuzzy…and not real.
Here’s to healing on a global level!!! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a footprint here 😊💜
