The Unforgiving Mind & The Key to Happiness

Morning-Glory

A Course in Miracles ~ Lesson 121

“The unforgiving mind is full of fear, and offers love no room to be itself; no place where it can spread its wings in peace and soar above the turmoil of the world. The unforgiving mind is sad, without the hope of respite and release from pain. It suffers and abides in misery, peering about in darkness, seeing not, yet certain of the danger lurking there.”

How does a beautiful child full of innocence and love become a vessel that through the years holds layer upon layer of guilt, pain, and shame? How does a soul forget its beauty; its magnificence?

This back slide into unknown territory happens ever so slowly and as it moves into a full-blown life, erodes the memory of perfect love.

The key to happiness is forgiveness. The key to forgiveness is to soften your heart and let it open like a flower as it reaches for the sun. Did you know that the morning glory flower only lives for a day? It blooms pre-dawn, and then in all its glory spends one magnificent day basking in the sun.

May you recognize the importance of our time here, WHILE YOU ARE HERE. We are afforded more time than the morning glory, but it is my experience that most people waste so much of it allowing themselves to be chained to an unforgiving mind.

I have worked with forgiveness, and I can see and feel the difference it has made in my life. I have returned to a state of peace that lives deep inside. This peace radiates to those around me, because when one heals…we all feel the benefits.

The concept is simple, but not necessarily easy. The journey of forgiveness travels through pain but offers salvation on the other side; a recognition of truth.

Blessitude!

  1. Beautiful musings Lorrie. I love this passage; “The key to forgiveness is to soften your heart and let it open like a flower as it reaches for the sun.” May we live from love; forgiving, basking, and spreading the glory. Hugs!

    1. Just love your energy, Brad! Thanks for adding it here. Yes, if we can spread the good things and continue to heal, I believe we can change the world! It seems to be hurting…and the only way I know is to send love…lots of love! And…FORGIVENESS!
      Sweet blessings, Brad!

  2. I’ve been writing a lot how feeling of guilt, grief even if we realize that is a normal thing needs to be limited, being sorry, self-pity, hate, envy and similar emotions are so destroying.
As I get older, I am so calm, so fine with everything. Art is a very big part of it. I will have one more exhibition in September and maybe even some more in summer, too. Things are going smoothly and nicely.
We cannot have the feeling that life is unfair or it is somebody else’s fault that our life doesn’t turn out how we expect. Expect the best, have no enemies, but people who teach you and everything is fine. It also refers to those who see themselves as victims of other people, circumstances and similarly.

    1. I can feel your sweet vibe, Inese! And your words ring with such truth! I spent many years stuck in the misery of victimhood. Boy am I ever grateful I learned how to break that bond and be responsible for my life with my thoughts.
And yes…no enemies…just teachers!!! Love it!
Keep rocking it, Inese…I feel your soul! <3

  3. Oh, Lorrie, how tremendously important a message this post is! I know how powerful forgiveness is and that as well it is a journey and a process. We only hurt ourselves when we hold grudges. When those whose parents are the same as mine I see slowly eroding over time because of holding onto hatred, it’s heartbreaking. I’m so happy for YOU that you have done and am doing the courageous work it takes to face head-on something within us that is festering from woundedness. Good for you for stepping out of the box that is “labeled” “do not forgive” in order to walk the freedom to forgiveness. I am so proud of you! Bless you for encouraging others to walk this path that too many just don’t. xoxoxo

    1. Hi Amy! I know you have walked this journey as well…and I am proud of you too! Years ago, I never would have thought that the key to freedom and happiness…and PEACE was so closely linked to forgiveness. Now, because I have worked through so much…INCLUDING…if not MOST IMPORTANTLY…forgiving MYSELF!!!
Thanks, dear heart, for leaving your energy here😁 You always make any place you visit…better.
      Have a great week! 💜💜

      1. Ah, you brought up self-forgiveness. That, my friend, IMO, is the hardest to do. There are times to this day I still recall one of our babies and what I did wrong and then the scenario what I now know today to do but not then. Immediately following that are tears and a terrible agony in my heart. From there I begin a Conversation from Self to self, and it ends with me taking a huge deep freeing breath after I [again] have forgiven myself. NOT easy!
You have a great week as well! I pray many people wake out of their funk that this winter brought, and in so doing focus on forgiveness which is so key to their Peace. Much LOVE to you and (((HUGS)))!!! xo

  4. Another awesome and inspiring post, dear friend! Thank you
Ive learned the Lord gives us this peace when trust in Him.

  5. I was just today reading about ways to forgive ourselves which is often harder than forgiving others. My favorite suggestion had to do with how to respond to the inner critic with compassion but firmness. Maybe we can learn from the morning glory about taking each day as a precious opportunity to love ourselves and others. Your posts always get me to think in positive, healing directions, Lorrie. Thank you so much! <3

    1. Awwww…thank you so much, JoAnna😊 You just touched my soul with a smile from the inside!
The self-love and forgiveness is a huge journey. Sometimes it feels I have made huge progress and then like the pendulum swings I fall into deep, dark, ugly places. The best part is when I recognize it right away and I am able to “fix” it right then…and there!
Many sweet blessings to you JoAnna…I hope all is well in your world 💜

    1. Hi Lisa! Thanks so much for adding your energy here. It is hard to grasp the concept of forgiveness when we allow our pain to take center stage. I am happy you know the benefits…it will always free the soul!
      Sweet Blessings…hope you are well😊

  6. Forgiveness is the key factor we often overlook. While we may forgive others we may have to fig deeper still into ourselves before we can dispel our innermost shadows and turn that forgiveness onto ourselves. When we do, and let it go, and we truly embrace ourselves, we then step out of our dark tunnel into the light.
    Lovely post Lorrie.
    Much love your way. 💕🤗🙏

    1. I love it Sue…step out of the dark tunnel…yes…I see it as a well…dark and dank!
It’s so nice to hear from you. I wonder why the self-forgiveness seems to be harder and come later. It definitely was the case with me. I just the other day treated myself so badly and it felt terrible. I must be a whole lot better than I used to be because it was glaringly evident immediately. I berated myself and judged myself so harshly…AND I HATED IT!!
Here’s to the freedom…and peace that comes with forgiveness…may every soul learn the lesson.
I hope you are well, Sue 💜

  7. Dearests Lorrie, what a beautiful posting, and what seems to be the usual with you, is that I read it at a time when it particularly resonated with me. It cultivated some awareness and introduced some balance to my day. Sending you heaps of love, Harlon

    1. Hi Harlon💜
How are you, my friend? I think of you often and pray that you are healing every single day!
Thanks for always being a source of incredible support for me. I am happy if my posts touch you in a way that help…even if it is only a teeny tiny bit 😉
Things here in the States are a bit strange…as I’m sure they must be throughout the world. Sending prayers you can stay away from this virus!! I feel as though I am underreacting…but that is better than overreacting I suppose.
Sending you lots of love and light 💜
